During a heated town hall meeting on Saturday (March 7) at the Terry Miller Recreation Centre in Brampton, concerned parents, community members and retired teachers called for a referendum on the province's sex education curriculum.
Organized by Peel's Home Owners Welfare Association (HOWA), a large number of people from across the GTA, including Mississauga-Erindale MPP Harinder Takhar and Brampton-Springdale MPP Harinder Malhi, attended the meeting.
“We’re asking for a referendum,” said Lou Iacobelli, a retired Toronto Catholic District School Board teacher. “This curriculum is not age appropriate."
Iacobelli, also a blogger and community activist, called the consultation process ‘a joke’ and said this government is avoiding to listen to the people who actually voted it to power. He said the right thing to do was to put this curriculum on the Liberal election agenda before the 2014 Ontario elections.
“Let’s reclaim your parental responsibilities for the sake of the innocence of the children and protect their safety because this curriculum is not going to protect children,” said Iacobelli.
Ontario’s Liberal government has announced the new curriculum, which includes homosexuality in Grade 3, puberty in Grade 6 (with masturbation as a possible topic) as well as information about sexually transmitted infections and delaying sexual activity in the Grade 7.
